Hillside, Illinois

Hillside is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,155 at the 2000 census.
One notable landmark in Hillside is the Mount Carmel Cemetery. On the grounds of the cemetery are the graves of a number of organized crime figures, such as Al Capone. A number of Bishops and Archbishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago are buried in the Bishop's Mausoleum at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 8,155 people, 2,998 households, and 2,035 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,464.5/km² (3,797.4/mi²). There were 3,107 housing units at an average density of 558.0/km² (1,446.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 49.29% White, 36.89% African American, 0.17% Native American, 5.13% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 5.79% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.10% of the population.
There were 2,998 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the village the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,776, and the median income for a family was $59,375. Males had a median income of $37,321 versus $32,051 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,638. About 4.9% of families and 6.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.1% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.
