Highway 1 (Hebrew: כביש 1), is the main highway connecting Tel Aviv with Jerusalem. The highway is interrupted only at the entrance to Jerusalem while it passes through the city via Begin Expressway. On the eastern side of Jerusalem, Highway 1 continues into the Palestinian Authority controlled West Bank past Ma'ale Adummim, and is then downgraded in size until the Almog Junction with Route 90 south of Jericho near the shores of the Dead Sea. On completion of current construction at the western entrance to Jerusalem, the road will continue uninterrupted north of the city. From its western end in Tel Aviv to the entrance to Jerusalem, the entire road is a freeway.

The highway briefly crosses over the Green Line near Latrun, and continues onto the West Bank past Jerusalem. Renewed access to this section, which connects Jerusalem to Jericho and the Dead Sea and is known as the "Jericho Road" (Hebrew: דרך יריחו) or the Adumim Ascent (Hebrew: מעלה אדומים), was famously noted alongside the reunification of Jerusalem in the famous Israeli song, Jerusalem of Gold.
