The soundtrack for the Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical, was released on January 10, 2006 and debuted at #143 on the Billboard 200, selling 6,469 copies in its first week. The album has since generated much success by climbing to #1 on the Billboard album chart in early March and again in late March of 2006. It has been certified 3x Platinum[1].
The album has reached #1 on both the iTunes Best Selling Albums and on Amazon.com's Top Sellers for Music, as well as producing five songs on the iTunes Top 10 Best Selling Songs, and also producing five Top 40 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The High School Musical soundtrack is also the first TV soundtrack to be No.1 in the Billboard since Miami Vice.

Mainstream success
In the soundtrack's first week, it debuted at #143 on the Billboard 200. In its second week, it jumped 85 spots to #58 on the Billboard 200 chart and was labeled Pacesetter by Billboard. In its third week, it jumped 48 spots to #10 and has since reached #1 for two nonconsecutive weeks. It is certified 3x Platinum[2]. According to Billboard.com, High School Musical is the best selling album of 2006 as of July 5, 2006 with sales of over 3 million records.
As of July 30, 2006, the soundtrack has peaked at #1 on the Australian ARIA top 50 albums chart. It stayed in that position for 2 consecutive weeks and has been certified platinum. It also peaked at #1 on the New Zealand RIANZ top 40 albums chart and has been certified platinum. Also, as of September 10, 2006, the soundtrack has peaked at #1 on the Argetinian CAPIF albums chart. The soundtrack debuted at 28 on the Brazilian Top 40 CD Sales chart and was #1 for the week ending October 7, 2006.

- "Breaking Free" went from number #86 to #4 in its second week, an 82 point jump on the Hot 100.
- "Get'cha Head in the Game" went from number #100 to #23 in its second week, a 74 point jump.
- Andrew Seeley sang in several of the songs, his voice being blended with Zac Efron's. He originally wasn't given credit for singing.
- "It was mentioned on About.com that "Walt Disney Records" is planning on releasing "High School Musical Soundtrack" on a Special Edition CD. This CD is now availabe in stores.
On June 27, 2006 "A Tribute to High School Musical" was released on CD.
