The High Council of State in Algeria was a collective presidency set up by the military in 1992 following the annulled elections in December 1991.

It consisted of:

Chairman of the HCS was Mohamed Boudiaf from January 16, 1992 until his death on June 29, 1992. He was succeeded by Ali Kafi until the HCS was replaced by president Liamine Zéroual in 1994.

The HCS halted Algeria's gradual democratization and economic liberalization and abolished all parties. In short, it made the country a socialist single-party state again. However, it was effective in fighting the Islamist rebellion and eventually defeated it after gaining the support of moderate Islamic and other opposition parties. In 1999, with the Algerian Civil War nearly over, it restored free elections. The winner of those presidential elections, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, is the current Algerian president.
