Hibernia Atlantic is a Transatlantic submarine communications cable system in the North Atlantic Ocean which connects Canada, the United States, Ireland and England.
It was originally built by 360networks in 1999-2000, placed in receivership in 2001, then purchased in 2003. It is now owned and operated by CVC Acquisition Company Limited
It is a Tycom designed Terawave DWDM system transporting 10Gb/s SDH/SONET/WAN-PHY/LAN-PHY signals and is capable of 40Gb/s transport due to its short span across the Atlantic (Similar path to the original TransAtlantic cables of the 1850's)
It has landing points in:
- Herring Cove, Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada
- Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
- Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
- Southport, Lancashire, UK
As at the year-end of 2004 it had a transmission capacity of 320 Gbit/s, and a total cable length of 12,200 km. It is capable of being upgraded to a capacity of 5,120 Gbit/s. It started operation on 8 April 2001.
