The Classic transit bus began production by General Motors Diesel Division in 1982, as an updated version of their highly successful New Look transit bus.
The Classic bus design was sold to Motor Coach Industries (MCI) in 1987, who continued the design until they were bought by NovaBus in 1993.
Unlike the New Look, which could be purchased in many different lengths from 30- up to 60-foot, the Classic was only ever available in two lengths: 40- and 60-foot.
The 60-foot long articulated Classic was introduced by MCI in 1992. Only 16 of these buses were ever produced, with 14 of them going to Metro Transit in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, and the other 2 to the Reseau de Transport de la Capitale (RTC) in Quebec City, Quebec Canada. When NovaBus took over production of the Classic in 1993, they dropped the articulated version of the design.
Classic model numbers are very similar to the New Look model numbers:
The first letter indicates the type of bus it is (T for transit), next the model (C for Classic), the length in feet, the width in inches, and an A for air conditioning or N for no air conditioning. Since only two versions of the Classic were produced, there are only two different model numbers: TC40-102N and TC60-102N.
The Classic design was discontinued by NovaBus in 1997, when they decided to focus on their new low floor design, the Nova LFS.
