"Hey Porter" is one of Johnny Cash's earliest songs. It was first released in 1955 and remains among his most famous songs. Since childhood, Cash had been interested in railroads, and by writing "Hey Porter" he finally put one of his childhood memories in his songs. The song makes a reference to the Mason-Dixon line.
The 2005 film, Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, featured "Hey Porter" in the background, but it did not appear on the soundtrack.
