"Hey Mama" is a song originally on the mixtape Freshman Adjustment after some editing to the song it was then also put on Kanye West's second album, Late Registration. The song is dedicated to his mother, Dr. Donda West. In the lyrics, West describes his mother as being compassionate and loving despite his decision to discontinue his schooling in pursuit of a recording career, which she originally opposed. The song was originally set to be the first single from Late Registration, as Kanye had stated many times in 2004 and early 2005 that it would be, however, "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" eventually became the first single, and the plan to turn "Hey Mama" into a single never materialized. Kanye West performed the song live on Oprah, with his mother in the audience.

The line "Hey Mama, You know I act a fool" refers to a similar line in West's 2004 single "Jesus Walks".
