Heung Yee Kuk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heung Yee Kuk (Chinese: 鄉議局; lit. 'Rural Assembly') is a statutory advisory body representating the indigenous inhabitants living in the New Territories of Hong Kong.

[edit] History

The body is a statutory advisory body in the New Territories, Hong Kong. It was established by the Heung Yee Kuk Ordinance (Chapter 1097) and first enacted December 11, 1959 (as 45 of 1959 originally).

Over the years the organisation has dabbled into charity work. For example, in 1966, it donated HK$660,000 to start a school in Yuen Long known as Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School.

The Heung Yee Kuk also provides a functional constituency in the Hong Kong Legislative Council elections. Each rural committee has representative in the body.
