Heterograms

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In segmental scripts (alphabets, abjads, abugidas), a heterogram (from hetero-, meaning different, + -gram, meaning something written down) is a word spelt different from what is intended to be pronounced as. This occurs in the Pahlavi script, the Khwarezmian language, Sogdian language, and the Parthian language. An example from Pahlavi, is the spelling of shah as MLK (which is the Aramaic spelling of malik) meaning "king". The phenomenon resembles the use of kun-yomi in Japanese.
