Hester Latterly

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hester Latterly is a fictional character created by Anne Perry. She is the partner of inspector William Monk, whom she met during the case of her father's death, in the first book of the Monk series.

She belonged to a good family, but had a strong sense of patriotism, and went to the Crimean War as a nurse. There she worked with Florence Nightingale, until she had to come back to England, because of her father's death.

In England she worked at the Royal Free Hospital of London, as a nurse, but later she quit after arguing with her boss. Then, she started to work as a private nurse.

When she married Monk, she started a shelter hospital for prostitutes.

[edit] Personality

She is a woman of strong character and unlike other women in the Victorian era she speaks her mind, and is not afraid to contradict men. She shares character traits with Monk, being obstinate and possessing a strong sense of justice. Her sense of fair play is why she helps Monk in the first books, when she did not like him at all).

Even though she seems to be insensitive, she follows her heart. When lawyer Sir Oliver Rathbone asks for her hand in marriage, she refuses him even though he is a good man and in an excellent economic situation. However, she loved Monk, although he was only a private investigator, and married him.

In the books, she risks her own life for others, displaying considerable selflessness.
