Arms granted to Herefordshire County Council 28th February 1946. These arms became obsolete in 1974 when the county council was abolished. The arms came back into use with the creation of a unitary authoroty of Herefordshire in 1998. The arms were transferred to the new County of Herefordshire District Council by Order in Council.
The colours of the shield are red and white – taken from the arms of the City of Hereford, the red also recalling for the colour of the soil of Herefordshire and the distinctive Hereford red cattle. The blue and white wave represents the River Wye The white lion, derived from the royal arms of England comes for the city arms. At the base of the shield is a Hereford bull’s face. The crest is a red lion holding a gold fleece based on the seal of the borough of Leominster. The fleece also recalls the former wool industry of the district. The supporters are an English lion and a white Talbot, or mastiff from the arms of the Talbots, Marcher Lords of Shrewsbury representing the position of the county with the other counties of England in the east and the Welsh counties in the west. The supporters are respectively charged with a wreath of hops and a collar showing three cider apples.
