[edit] Synopsis
[edit] Scherzo Alla Pollacca
The first part is a bitter, tragicomic story of Dzidziuś, a street-wise dodger, bon-vivant, drunkard and a coward, who unwillingly becomes a soldier of the Armia Krajowa during the Warsaw Uprising. Since his wife is having an affair with a Hungarian officer stationed nearby, Dzidziuś is ordered to reach the Hungarian unit and convince the officer to join the fighting against the Germans.
[edit] Ostinato Lugubre
The second novel is set in a POW camp for Polish soldiers. One of the interned soldiers decides to escape. While none of his colleagues is sure if he actually made it out, his absence troubles the guards and provides a sense of hope and inspiration for the rest of prisoners. His escape makes him a hero and helps to keep the morale of the inmates high. However, it turns out that Lieutenant Zawistowski did not actually escape, but is hiding in the attic of one of the barracks and that he escaped there as much from the Germans as from his colleagues, whose ostentatious patriotism he simply could not stand.
