[edit] Heroes' Day in Andorra

This holiday, celebrated in the small, western European country of Andorra, honors the approximately 1.200 soldiers that fought on the side of the Allies during World War II. Andorra was supported by the British and Free French.

Every year, Andorrans gather in the town square to not only celebrate their World War II heroes, but also the annual harvest. This celebration also serves as an effective way to pass down through the generations the rich and vibrant history of Andorra, the elder generation using oral and visual methods to retell the history that the text books leave out. Often, a pole is erected in the center of the town square and the citizens dance around it, much like a maypole in other nations. This gathering also gives the townspeople a chance to compete with each other in various ways, such as baking the largest or most opulent pastry, or owning the largest livestock or vegetable. Such rivalry can sometimes lead to violent disputes, but is usually lighthearted and solely for fun.

Heroes' Day is held on the 8th of September to coincide with National Day.
