Censorship
Regarding the Censorship, how do the Japanese government censor the porn site on internet? It is probably enforceable to ban hardcore web site based in Japanese, but how is it possible to ban surfer to visit porn site based in the US?
Juuitchan> I don't know. I think maybe it is not possible.
As with any other censorship, the prohibition ("thou shalt not") is independent of the enforcement method. Just because it's not technically feasible to effectively restrict information on the Internet, doesn't make it less of a crime and doesn't reduce the penalty if you're found guilty of breaching the censorship. Censorship relies on people respecting government mandate (or fearing the penalties), not on technical blocks. -- Bignose
The bigger question is, why is this page in an encyclopedia, as opposed to a dictionary.
Is Hentai actually illegal in Japan? Is Japanese-style Hentai primarily for export, e.g., to the West? What are the restrictions on pornographic photos and drawings in Japan?
How much of the talk of what is "permitted" in Japanese sexuality is a reflection of what actually goes on in Japan vs. the way they want to portray their society to outsiders?
I've seen Japanese businessmen lined up 2 or 3 deep at magazine racks in NYC, looking at porno mags, some of which would be good for a quick trip to the federal pen (child pornography) if it were being viewed by Americans in a regular English-language bookstore. What's up, is there a double standard? --Uncle Ed 14:44, 5 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- Depictions of genitals are illegal in Japan, so in pornography, the genitals are always half-heartedly censored. However, erotic comics are intended to be read in Japan, and export to the United States is a small market that has hardly gained attention. I know that much.
- I also know that Japan definitely never had a repression of sexuality in the past, like all of Europe and America did. (It used to be extremely perverted and vulgar to say the word "leg" to a woman in the United States. I definitely need to insert that tidbit into the Wikipedia if it's not there already.) I'm not sure why there are such strict laws about the depiction of genitals, because nudity is taken quite lightly in Japan compared to the U.S.
- Finally, I have heard that lolicon (i.e. illustrated child porn) is a loophole in the law, because some court decision allowed explicit illustrated nudity in the case of children, under the assumption that nobody would ever think of drawing such pornography. However, that is simply scuttlebutt, and since I don't know the actual Japanese court decision I'm not going to write it up on the Wikipedia. Ashibaka ✎ 21:04, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

- Okay, that information was totally wrong. Japanese pornography laws date back to the Meiji Restoration, when all pornography was outlawed. So it was indeed repressed then, although only by the government. Since then the laws have been slowly relaxed, to the point that an additional anti-child porn law needed to be added in 1999. - >About the Lolicon loophole, unlike real life pornography, there isn't an actual age to a person in a drawing, so, you can make a game with little girls in it and claim all characters in the game are over 18; like the game "Hajimete no Orusuban" (literally "First Time Home Alone"). That claim was heavily debated, which made it famous and even more people bought it. Atlasia 12:05, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Should something be done about all those H somethings and List of H somethings? I think that
- These pages are already included in the category H, so they can safely be delinked from this page. Some of them can still be linked from the article text, of course. Furthermore, the Category:Hentai currently only has 18 pages, while it should have all pages linked from these lists as well (or its subcategories should). Paranoid 17:00, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Moved some content here from elsewhere
Most people objected to the content I've just added here being found under "Cartoon", so I moved it here instead. If the content is useful, it will probably be redistributed into other sections. The first two paragraphs could be sectioned "On the Internet", and the third one, perhaps "Motivations". But that's up to those who enjoy this page enough to edit it. Hentai - reflection of a restrained society
University studies in the area of psychology and psychoanalysis explain that Hentai is a direct consequence of some generations oppressed and restrained in the Japanese society. Now, after the opening and of the wave of "freedom occidental person" who takes Japan since 70's, the Hentai gains force, stimulated for the Internet. --193.188.105.22 04:07, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Pictures?
The page could need some pictures.
- Ho ho ho. Ashibaka (tock) 16:13, 1 May 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, an example would add to the page. Most articles have them! It doesn't have to actually show anything down there, just the style used. (unsigned comment by User: Sonic Mew, 12 June 2005)

- I second more pictures. MORE PICTURES! (unsigned comment by anon 62.252.0.6)
Japanese at the end of the first paragraph
There seems to be something odd with the Japanese at the end of the first paragraph. I don't speak the language, but I'm not sure that a 1 and 8 belong in there.
- "juu hachi kin anime" (18禁アニメ)
Evil Monkey∴Hello 06:32, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
18禁 (18 prohibition) means that you have to be 18 years old. Or rather, that it is pornography.
Philip Nilsson 13:52, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
- Okay then. Just looked odd, though maybe someone had got the wrong unicode. Evil Monkey∴Hello 00:35, May 27, 2005 (UTC)
I added information to the first paragraph. Specifically "seinen" (成年; adult), and changed "never" to "rarely" in regard to how the word is used in Japan. It's used, just not as often as in the States. nihon 16:04, 30 September 2005 (UTC).
External links
If you're new to Wikipedia, please read Wikipedia:External links. That document is the guideline that moderates concerns with respect to disputes about external linking.
The links I've removed from this page:
- 3 directories (hentaiseeker, banzaihentai and adult hentai search). Normally we would leave one of these, but all three appear to be commercial services that offer hentai, not directories of unaffiliated resources. If they were notable on their own, then we might create pages for them, but they are neither true directories nor notable.
- 4 TGP sites. These are pure ad spam pages, and have no information relative to hentai.
- 1 picture rating page which, in my 2-minute perusal, appeared to be nothing more than another TGP.
If you feel that any specific site that was listed should be re-listed, please discuss it here in terms of the policy linked to, above. Thanks.
- Thoroughly agreed. Wikipedia must not be abused to promote commercial Web sites. --FOo 20:05, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
Harmil, why did you remove the link to http://wakaba.c3.cx/soc/kareha.pl/1121956450? I could accept an argument about whether or not it belongs there, but it's not spam. --130.232.31.109 20:09, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry I was slow to respond. Yes, I agree that it makes sense. Feel free to re-add and mention the talk page discussion. -Harmil 17:22, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
Lolicon definition
64.231.236.43 keeps changing the definition for lolicon to one taken from the lolicon page:
- Lolicon, usually involves female characters between the ages of 8 and 13 (sometimes, between 3, 4 and 17, 18 in Japanese rorikon.)
The original one is:
- Lolicon, includes girls who are underage. In Japan this usually means fifteen or younger. In some cases the ambiguity of age may allow a character to fit the age of consent, usually sixteen in Japan. Some depictions are of more obviously younger children, and would therefore count as child pornography.
The former definition, from the lolicon page, is horribly awkwardly written, and focuses on a series of seemingly arbitary numbers. None of these numbers appear on the Japanese lolicon page, and that page doesn't seem to support this definition at all. The old definition seems far more encyclopedic and informative to me, and therefore I've been reverting to it.
64.231.236.43, if you want to change the definition, please outline some of the ways the new one is better. Or preferrably, re-write it to be less awkward. --130.232.31.109 17:43, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
The old one was pretty confuse and wasn't really that informative. Also the writting stating it could be considered as child pornography is quite wrong, else it would be for the whole definition, not just one part IMO. Also, the age of consent in Japan is not 16, but 13. 64.231.236.43
Is "between 3, 4 and 17, 18" not confusing? That definition just lists a bunch of numbers, and those numbers are pretty much arbitary - the Japanese page doesn't, for instance, list any of them. Also, the age of consent in Japan is listed as "16/18" on [[1]]. Can you cite a source for that "13" claim? --130.232.31.109 01:35, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
If you ask me, if I find this 'between 3, 4 and 17, 18' quite confusing myself and think it would be less confusing without it (I didn't bother editing it in the lolicon page for overall boreness I guess). If you look here[2], it is said that the age of consent for sexual activities is 13. 64.231.236.43
