Henry Trengrouse (March 18, 1772–February 14, 1854) was born in Helston, Cornwall, was educated at the Grammar School, and lived there all of his life, working as a builder and cabinet-maker. Dismayed by the great loss of life he had witnessed when the frigate HMS Anson was wrecked on the nearby Loe Bar, he developed a rocket-powered rescue apparatus, now known as the Breeches buoy, an example of which is on display at Helston Folk Museum [1]. He is buried in the churchyard of St Michael's Church, Helston, and is commemorated in the naming of Trengrouse Way, a main thoroughfare in the town.
