Henry K. Moeller

Henry K. Moeller (1849 - 1925) was a U.S. archbishop. He served as the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cincinnati between 1904 and 1925.
Henry K. Moeller was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on December 11, 1849. His only sister entered the convent of the Sisters of Charity at Mount Saint Joseph, Ohio. Of his four brothers, two also became Roman Catholic priests. In 1862 he entered St. Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier college) and later the American college at Rome, which he entered October 16, 1869. He was ordained a priest in Rome, June 10, 1876 at the basilica of St. John Lateran. He left Rome June 28, 1869 to return to America and Cincinnati. His first year was spent ministering in Bellefontaine, Ohio. In October, 1877 he became a professor at Mount St. Mary seminary, where he continued in teaching until November 13, 1879.
After a brief leave of absence from the Cincinnati diocese to assist Bishop Francis Silas Marean Chatard, Bishop of Indianapolis, Henry K. Moeller returned to Cincinnati he became secretary to Bishop William Henry Elder, who was at that time coadjutor to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell.
On April 6, 1900 Henry K. Moeller was appointed Bishop of Columbus, Ohio. He was consecrated bishop August 25, 1900 in Cincinnati, at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. Principal Consecrator was Archbishop William Henry Elder, who was assisted by Bishop Henry Joseph Richter and Bishop Thomas Sebastian Byrne.
Bishop Henry K. Moeller returned to Cincinnati June 26, 1903 to serve as auxiliary bishop and coadjutor to Archbishop William Henry Elder.
Upon the death of Archbishop Elder, Bishop Henry K. Moeller became fourth Archbishop of Cincinnati. He was installed as Roman Catholic Bishop of Cincinnati February 15, 1905 and served the Archdiocese until his death in Cincinnati January 5, 1925.
Archbishop Moeller High School, a parochial school near Cincinnati, Ohio, was named for Bishop Moeller.
