Henry Balfour Gardiner

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Balfour Gardiner (18771950) was an English musician, composer, and teacher. Gardiner taught music briefly at Winchester College, collected English folk music and composed a very limited amount of music himself.

His best-known work, Evening Hymn, is a lush, romantic work of dense harmonies and is considered a classic of the English choral repertoire. It is still regularly performed as an anthem at evensong in Anglican churches.

In his later years, Gardiner gave up on public musical life to concentrate on an afforestation programme on his Dorset farm.

He is the great uncle of prominent conductor John Eliot Gardiner.
