Henrique Hilário M. Alves Sampaio, known simply as Hilário, (born October 21, 1975 in São Pedro da Cova in Portugal) is a Portuguese footballer, who plays as a goalkeeper in England for Chelsea.
He joined the club on July 1, 2006 from the Portuguese side Nacional Madeira, having previously played from FC Porto under current Chelsea manager José Mourinho in the 2003-2004 season.
Hilário is generally seen as a third choice goalkeeper for Chelsea, as backup to Petr Čech and Carlo Cudicini, but was handed a run in the first team after both Čech and Cudicini sustained injuries in Chelsea's game against Reading on October 14, 2006. He made his 2006 season debut on October 18 2006 against FC Barcelona at Stamford Bridge and was able to keep a clean sheet. On October 21, 2006, he made his Premier League debut with a win against Portsmouth. However, Cudicini has now reclaimed the first team goalkeeper's position. In a spell of fortune for the stopper, Hilario was given his third Champion's League appearance, against Bulgarian team Levski Sofia, which he managed to leave the 90 minutes with no goals conceded. In the original fixture in Sofia, Chelsea won 3-1, with Hilario on the bench.
