Henderson railway station is a major station on the Western Line of the Auckland railway network. It is near the major shopping centre, Westfield Henderson.

[edit] Station Name

It was proposed that this station be re-named Waitakere Central when it was upgraded. That was because it will be integrated with the Waitakere City Council's new Civic Building. It was not officially accepted as there was some opposition to the name change.

Some people claimed that the name should be left as it is since it is an accurate name representing the local suburb. It is also claimed that there was going to be confusion with the similarly-named Waitakere, the current terminus of the Western Line.

The Station is now named Henderson with Waitakere Central as a subtitle.

[edit] Bottleneck

Henderson is the only crossing point on the single-track Avondale-Waitakere section of the Western Line. It is a potential bottle-neck for the entire Western Line if trains do not arrive here on time. However work is currently underway to double-track the railway line between New Lynn and Henderson, with the aim of eventually improving on-time performance.
