Mission Statement The mission of the Hempfield School District, in partnership

with the community, is to provide a positive educational experience as the foundation for all students to achieve their full

potential as citizens in an ever changing society.

Hempfield High School is located in Landisville, Pennsylvania. The best all-around school in Lancaster County, it is known widely for arts, academics, and athletics.

The district is academically strong and traditionally performs extremely well on the PSSAs and SATs. In 2005-2006, thirteen students were honored as National Merit Finalists. Hempfield offers a wide range of honors and advanced placement classes, which prepare its students incredibly well for college. In fact, most honors classes are equivalent to freshman college classes[citation needed]. In addition, Hempfield owned the prestigious "Pennsylvania Math League" competition in 2006, winning both the school competition and, through Johnna Mahoney, the individual competition. Hempfield annually sends its graduates to some of the best colleges and universities throughout the country, including the University of Pennsylvania, Caltech, MIT, Georgetown, Yale, Williams and Harvard.

Hempfield High School is renowned for its extensive theater program and is highly regarded for its annual original production "Dance Theatre." The Dance Theatre show for Spring 2006 was entitled "No Limits". The cast participated in volunteer activities and fundraisers to benefit Aaron's Acres, a local daycamp for children with disabilities and their families. Hempfield's musical theatre productions, under the direction of Alan Mudrick, are also well known for their excellence. In Spring 2006, Hempfield performed "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." This productions starred Alex Stadel, Anastasia Kalan, Jonathan Mudrick, Emily Kleimo, Corey Hummerston, Galen Detweiler, and Jaclyn Klinger. Hempfield's Performing Arts Center is among the best constructed, and most expensive, high school stages in Pennsylvania. The "PAC" is often rented out by local dance companies and performance groups to hold their productions.

Hempfield is also known to have high achievement in athletics, especially swimming, baseball, football, basketball, track & field, and volleyball. Most notably, the men's volleyball team has recently won several state championships for the district. Swimmer Kyle Salyards, who swam the 200 meter breaststroke in the 2000 Olympics, is a graduate of Hempfield High School. Former major league baseball player Tom Herr and his son Aaron Herr, who is currently in the minors, are also alumni. Sophomore Sarah Ault will compete in the US Junior Open.

The Hempfield Black Knight Marching Band, under the direction of William Powers, is one of the most successful bands in the region. With over 100 members, it is known for entertaining shows, including the 2005 field show; "Come Sail Away: A Styx Anthology" featuring several solos and a difficult marching sequence paired with an exciting percussion feature. The 2006 field show features the music of funk and soul group, "Earth, Wind, and Fire." The band competes in several competitive events under the Cavalcade of Bands in the Yankee Division. In 2005 the band traveled to Atlanta, Georgia and was given top ratings at a large music festival. They will again travel to a music festival in May of 2007 to be held in Cleveland, Ohio. Notable achievements include a 2nd place finish in the Yankee "Open" division in 2005 and a 1st place finish in the Yankee "A" division in 2006, both at the Cavalcade of Bands Championships at Hersheypark.

Hempfield High School students and alumni are collectively known as the "Black Knights." [1] Here are the lyrics to Hempfield's Alma Mater, traditionally only sung at commencement by chorus members, and played by various band members. "Our loyalty we give to thee, and sacred honor too To help us in our future, that we our best may do. Honor, gratitude, loyalty All of these we give, to thee!"
