Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery is one of the most popular monasteries around Leh, northern India. Situated 45 kms from Leh, also known as Chang-Chub-Sam-Ling (lone place of compassionate person), the Gompa (ladakhi for monastery) houses a large library. Padmasambhava, the annual Hemis festival, is held in early June.
A Red Hat Sect monastery, Hemis was established in 1672 AD by Ladakhi king Senge Nampar Gyalva.
