i was looking in google and had already looked in wikipedia and read through your article. I went into a website called www.answers.com please send a message to (email address removed to prevent spam) to tell me you have delt with these people.

[edit] Styling of words, e.g. handmade, hand-made, hand made

This keeps bothering me and I haven't yet come across a style guide or such that addresses the question. Sometimes people use words which 'normally' have a hyphen, or which 'normally' are joined, but rather they split up the word into two parts. It happens quite too often for it to be confusion by just non-native English speakers. Actually all sorts of misusages occur (see [1]) and knowing where the applicable style guide is would be a help. I'd say this is more of a spelling issue than a style issue. I would just use your preferred dictionary to correct the spellings. My dictionary of choice, Merriam-Webster (American English), lists "handmade" and "in fact" and those are the spellings I would use. I don't think there's any formal policy; I would take "Spell words correctly!" or "Use spellings that occur in the dictionary!" as appropriate. (Of course, this does not apply to switching national varities of English, such as British to American English.) — Knowledge Seeker 05:50, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

How would one go about requesting features (or extensions) for MediaWiki?

One is adding a count for the number of images in a category on the category, for example Category:Astronomy_images states "There are 0 pages in this section of this category.", but makes no reference to the image below it.

I'd also like to request a feature to have Special:uncategorized pages be seperable by namespace. I want to be able to find uncategorized images as well as other pages.

Hi,

I created an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Sutherland_%28author%29. I want to distinguish it from another entry for a different George Sutherland, but don't think that I have achieved this. Can you tell me how to fix it.

If there are only the two George Sutherland articles, it would be best to go to the George Sutherland page and add :''This article is about the English-born U.S. jurist and political figure. For the Scottish-born Australian writer, see [[George Sutherland (author)]].'' to the top of the page (do not remove the quotation marks as these are italics tags). The reverse of this would also be useful on the author page. If there are more than two George Sutherland articles, it might be worth considering setting up a disambiguation page (let us know if you want instructions on how to do this). [edit] Box At Bottom

I see on many articles a box at the bottom of the article with links to different articles.

Those are two examples. I want to create one for an article to add links to the character articles of that show, but I don't know how to make one. I have gone to other pages and clicked Edit so that I could copy the code for the box so that I could paste it in the other article and change the text and links inside it, but the code for it is missing.

So I have two questions.

How do you make those boxes? How come you can't edit them?

Sorry if I was confusing, but I have never been very good at explaining, and it doesn't help that I don't know the name of that box. :(

Those boxes are what you call templates. For example, you can edit the box displayed in the Neopet article by going to Template:Viacom. To make your own template, just type in Template:TEMPLATENAME in the search box on the left-hand side of your screen and then hit go. Now you can create the article. To include it on the pages you want, simply add its name inbetween curly brackets: {{ TestName }}. More info at Help:Template. --Hetar 22:19, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

I have another question. How do you add images to articles? I checked the URL of images on articles, and it said upload.wikipedia. When I tried to put an image from another site in it, nothing appeared. So I have three questions.

How do you add images to the article (not the code, but how do make the image actually appear)? Can images from other sites not be used, or does it just not work for me? What is upload.wiki, and can anyone add images to it?

Generally, you should not use images from other websites. Normally this violates both our policies as well as multiple legal restrictions. If the image in question has been released under a free license or you think it qualifies for a fair use exception then you will need to upload it. Once the image has been uploaded it can be included in the article by using the following code [[Image:IMAGENAME.JPG]]. [edit] Question of notability

I heard an ensemble on Prairie Home Companion tonight, which was their second appearance on the show at least, that doesn't have an article. I looked over the notability requirements for music acts and they don't meet a single one that I know of. Although, they've been together since 1900 which I think is a rather long time and therefore notable. Also, their second CD will be coming out later this year. They are the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra. Here'stheir write up at the Classical Mandolin Society page. And according to this they are the "only mandolin group in America in continuous existence since the turn of the century". That's just after a quick google search. I'm aware of WP:BITE and I'm not biting by pointing out the obviousness in the fact that someone introducing themselves in a professional capacity of an organization would provide an e-mail like an AOL address. Crossmr, Concentration (game show) was produced from 1958 to 1973. It would be not at all surprising if a producer from the show had retired or moved to a position with another broadcasting corporation in the intervening three decades. In either case, using a personal email address would be quite reasonable. Please be civil and don't bite the new editors – particularly not those who have specialized expertise which they have made a good-faith offer to share – by posting implied criticisms without doing your research first. I am from the Dutch Wikipedia and I am looking here to find out how to list an article for deletion. I worked through several policy pages but cannot find anything. Please can somebody list eiland for deletion. This is total nonsence. It says there are living 170.000 persons. No such big town exists of this name. The user may be blocked.

Please make a small addition about this procedure on your Help page for foreigners. On the FAQ I also could find nothing. Known to you all, but not to somebody outside your community.

I authored an environmental article titled, Sarnia: A Canadian Community Under Seige (I know "seige" is spelled wrong, but that is how it went) under my name; Bud Whiteye. I also registered under Bud Whiteye, AND you sent me a confirmation line to "click on" at my email address trbw@kent.net so I could know I am registered, What happened to my registration and what happened to my article?

I tried to re-register, but your instructions said "Bud Whiteye" was already in use, and left me no instructions on what to do. I'm the only Bud Whiteye in the world, so the instructions that say "Bud Whiteye" is in use is me.

There don't seem to be any clear instructions on how to create and edit one's userpage. I've had to rely on the kindness of a few Wikipedians to get as far as I have. What I'd like to do now is add a pic of myself. Yet wherever I look, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of guidance as to how to edit userpages.

I obviously have a pic in mind in .jpg format.

Could anyone please explain to me in simple steps how to add that pic to my userpage?

Goto Special:Upload (the Upload file link on the left), upload your picture. Then link it in your userpage (e.g. [[Image:example.jpg|100px]] -> )

We are trying to work out if American media law takes precendence over that of canada in regards to the naming of subjects in criminal investigations. I'm *very* hazy about this but I *think* that in an ongoing effect to avoid american-bias we default to the norms of the country the offense happened in unless there is a good reason? Confused! This isn't really a helpdesk question - you could ask at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous, or you could try exploring Portal:Law to find some relevant expertise. It looks from the talk page as if a bit more discussion should sort out the dispute - if not, then reading the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution procedure is a good idea. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 21:42, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
As I understand it, Wikipedia is hosted in Florida, so the only applicable law is American (US) law, and specifically Florida Law. Canadian law does not affect Wikimedia as hosts of the content. Is there a definitive place within Wikipedia or Wikimedia to promote an independent wiki; preferably some place that actually has a decent amount of visibility to it?   • No. Promoting wikis outside those hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation is not one of our goals, so there's no place to do so. Many consider promotion of any site within Wikipedia vandalism. So I recommend you don't do it. - Mgm|(talk) 07:25, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

A red-link is simply a link to a page that dosen't exist, for example, there is no page called 'Sqwimf". So red-linked usernames are shown when a user has not yet created a userpage. Prodego talk 02:06, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IP signing with non-existent usernames

I discovered a talk page where an IP had signed with a non-existent userpage, so its not like they were trying to impersonate someone. I checked the username, no user page, no talk page, no contribs. Should I remove the signature and tag an unsigned on it with the correct info? --Crossmr 04:44, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's a big deal (without looking at the specific case) but if you like you could add the correct signature after the incorrect one. I avoid changing other people's comments.--Commander Keane 05:09, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Unless it is impersonating / vote-stacking attempt then it probably isn't a great deal. (In those situations, changing the signature and explain it in edit summary probably is a good idea) Otherwise it may just be an anonymous user trying to use some sort of name to identify him/her, not too big deal since no harm is done. --WinHunter (talk) 05:42, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I came across a spam filter while editing Chrononhotonthologos (see talk for an explanation of what I'm trying to do -- it's not my site, and I'm not a spammer.) It appears the external site referenced there is part of a spam filter somehow, though I don't understand why. meta:Spam blacklist doesn't seem to contain this site. I think it is likely because the link contains "logo & .com" (In spam filter: (?<![\./])logos\.com). You should probably report this to m:Talk:Spam blacklist#Proposed removals --WinHunter (talk) 06:31, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I have been using Wikipedia for a long time but every day, it seems like, I discover a new policy that I have never heard of. Today I discovered the guideline about avoiding trivia, which I was about to suggest. The search on Wikipedia is necessarily limited, to save system resources, but how else can I search for policies? Another trick you can use is to limit your search to only return results from a certain namespace (such as, in your case, Wikipedia:). [edit] How to mark a suspected copyright violation

I think that Image:Future_history_01.jpg is still under copyright, and I don't think it qualifies as fair use. I checked with the uploader and they don't have a reason to believe it's out of copyright.

I looked at the list of copyright-related image tags, and I think imagevio is what I need. However, it appears that that tag is used to replace the image, whereas what I'd like to just add a tag that flags it for deletion. Do I just delete the image and put in imagevio, or is there a way that leaves the image in place till a decision is made by an admin? Thanks. Mike Christie 12:46, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I am constructing an article in MS Office Word 2003 with the help of MathType 5.5. The article contains MS Word tables and various MathType symbol constructions both within cells of the tables and in the body of the text. I am completely new to Wiki and haven't managed to locate information within Wiki on how to upload the kind of document I have in mind. Please advise me on what to do.

I don't think it's possible to upload an MS Word document to Wikipedia. Perhaps there is a program that can make the conversion, but I haven't heard of one. Wikipedia articles (or, for that matter, pages in any site based on MediaWiki - the engine behind Wikipedia and similar sites) should be written in Wiki markup. [edit] Style question: capitalization of the names of French-language organizations

I am working on a translation of the article fr:Conseil national de la Résistance, an umbrella organization formed in 1943 to coordinate the different French resistance movements. What should the title of the article be in the English Wikipedia? The four possibilities are:

  1. Conseil national de la Résistance
  2. Conseil National de la Résistance
  3. National Council of the Resistance
  4. National Resistance Council

In my view, it should be either (1) or (2) but I'm not sure which one. As for (3) and (4), both have been used in other English Wikipedia articles [3] but in general the organization seems to be known in English by its French name. Given the nature of the organization, I doubt that it ever adopted an official English-language version of its name.

In French, initial caps are not routinely used in titles after the first word, so in French the organization is called Conseil national de la Résistance, but I'm wondering if in the English Wikipedia we should nevertheless refer to the organization as Conseil National de la Résistance. (But if so, why not Conseil National De La Résistance?)

I have looked at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters) and Wikipedia:Naming conventions but did not see a clear answer to this question. Before I actually create the article, I would like some guidance on whether to capitalize the N or not. --Mathew5000 16:02, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Will do. For some reason 2 does seem most natural, but it's also the most illogical. If we refer to the organization by its French-language name, shouldn't we use French-language capitalization rules, just as if it were a film or a book (e.g. Au revoir, les enfants)? There is an image on somebody's Flickr account that I want to add to Wikipedia (the commons) and an article. (Actually, there are probably a lot of pictures on Flickr I'd like to add so this applies to many images.) The image has the following license: CC Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 so it says I'm free to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work. So, am I correct in saying that all I need to do it upload the picture to the commons and include in the comments box the license used, the person's Flickr ID and the URL to the image? Hobart Johnston Whitley named and developed the area today known as Hollywood, California. HJ is what Hobart Johnston Whitley was called by, and was well known by the locals as a developer and mover and shaker of Los Angeles. HJ was instrumental in motivating the movie industry to move to his town of Hollywood. He formed several groups of businessmen which benefited by his expertise in developing the modern cities of his time. He formed a group of local business men to purchase the Van Nuys Lankershim lands of the San Fernando Valley. This was his move to get the land annexed to the City of Los Angeles for the water needed to sustain the big valley development he was about to accomplish. HJ is well known the Western United States history as well. Hobart was a good friend of Theodore Roosevelt and was on the board of directors of for the Chicago Rock Island Railroad in late 1800. He developed over 140 towns in the West. HJ was at the Oklahoma run and persuaded the U.S. Congress in Washington to allow Guthrie to be capitol of the new state. In the early 1900 Los Angeles and Southern California history, HJ is being brought to light for his great contributions to the cities that he was apart of. Normally, when a catagory (ex. Category:Selected anniversaries) is part of another category (Category:Wikipedia featured content), it will appear on the second category's list of Subcategories.

However, this is not true of Category:Wikipedia featured desktop backgrounds under Category:Wikipedia featured pictures. Here, "desktop backgrounds" was put in "featured pictures", but doesn't show up in its list of subcategories.

When adding categories to a page, is it standard for them to be listed alphabetically (for example: British film actors | Living people | Year of birth missing), or is that just some users' preference, or are somewhat-related categories supposed to be grouped together? The default is that category are listed alphabetically, though parameters entered in the category links can change the list method e.g. [[Category:Wkipedia:Help desk|2000]] would cause the article to list as if "2000" is the article name, then it is being sorted alphabatically using those entered parameters. --WinHunter (talk) 04:13, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

On Mon. June, 19, yesterday, in the box "On This Day...", there was a citation about the first baseball game to use modern rules being played in 1846. I came back to re-read the article, but the section had been updated. I looked in the archive section, which led me to a page titled "History of baseball in the United States." This is not the same article that was linked there on the 19th. I was wondering if anybody could tell me what that page was so I may finish reading it. James B.

Hello. Probably this is the wrong place to suggest something like this, but I have put up a Featured Articles RSS @ http://lagring.net/wikipedia.rss and wondered if that is something that could be cool to have at the front page. Not my RSS feed but that at the same time someone creates the featured article, the RSS also gets created. There should also have been a RSS for QOTD, news and featured picture.

I came across the page for Andrew Filipowski which struck me as blatant self-promotion. Turns out it is a verbatim copy of this person's grandiloquent PR bio. In typical circumstances I would have prodded it, however this person is clearly notable so I tagged it POV and Autobio instead. Should it be tagged copyvio too? I would like this page to be replaced with a short balanced biography, but I don't know the person's history well enough to do it myself. What is the best place to call for attention to this page, so that someone who knows better can start the editing process? It is very offensive to Tupac Shakur's memory to call him a "gangsta rapper" as you have done on your page about the Seven Day Theory. It is an insult. He was not "gangsta" which, by definition, means "gang member involved with violence". Please take out anything that says Tupac Shakur is a gangsta rapper. It is insulting, and I'm sure it's not the way he would have wanted to be remembered.

There's no set limit. See User:Durin/Admin charts for various charts on the subject. You'll see, for example, that with 2000 edits total you'd have an 80% chance of success. I understand (I don't vote myself) that people like to see a nice spread of edits (which rather reminds me of bombing patterns from Catch-22, but there we go.) Sorry if that's not much help.   • I was the one that deleted the page in question. Here's why:
  1. I doubt this is the person's own contact details. They talk about the girl in third person and ask the reader to contact them. Sharing someone else's contact details online is not allowed by law and thus we are allowed to stop it.
  2. Such information is a spam/vandal/troublemaker magnet. While Wikipedia is not censored, we should protect minors from getting in serious trouble by posting such contact information and educate them about safe surfing habits.

Asking here's fine, but if you think it should be deleted, you could've taken it to WP:MFD, asked admins at WP:AN/I to take action or simply tag it for speedy deletion yourself using {{db}} (actually {{db|your reason}}). - Mgm|(talk) 22:18, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Sometimes in looking at an article of some length I want to find out the history of a section of it, or of a particular sentence. Generally to see how long it's been in the article (a day? a week? a year?) and sometimes to see who put it in. Is that possible? For many articles, especially those that get vandalized every day such as Dick Cheney, the article's edit history is practically impossible to use, but might be practical if you could filter it by changes to just a particular section. --Mathew5000 05:53, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

To be more helpful: Soccer#History and development has a lot of information, but the question should be more specific. Games similar to soccer have been played throughout history. It was first played in England and has been played since the middle ages though the matches then basically just a huge fight to get the ball into the goal with hundreds of players on each team. The first rule book was in 1863 written by The Football Association (the english FA).

[edit] Unresponsive controversial editors

What is the best way to deal with an editor making controversial edits who is completely unresponsive to messages on their talk space, and requests in the reverts and any subsequent edits to take it to the talk page of the article, especially when its a part of the article thats already under discussion? I'm not talking they make an edit, you put an edit on their talk page and they immediately make another edit again. In my opinion, the article seems to be substantial enough to remain as it is: the listing is a little on the tedious side, perhaps, but is a useful reference to anyone wishing to know which towns do pass through it. [edit] My Wiki article "reads like an advertisement"

I just submitted an article (Murphy Rebel Aircraft) for the Wikipedia. I tried to keep it as straight forward and factual as I could - but the page has a "header in a block" that says "this article reads like an advertisement" I have followed many pages trying to find how to reword it so that it is "acceptable" to Wiki - but at the end of the day (2 AM in the morning actually) I can't see how to "de-advertise" a factual article about a kit built aircraft ?!?

I didn't want to write a wafly article that went on & on about personal junk - just a straight forward / useful information one

ALSO (and please be aware , that I am NO computer junkie ) I cannot figure out HOW to "Tag" my photo (to go with the article) - so that it will be accepted to appear WITH the article :o( Again- I followed many link pages - but nothing makes sense to me ... (and this IS my first ever attempt to contribute an article too)

I found my photot on the "untagged photos " page (VH-REB at Ayers Rock airport) - but I just can't figure out HOW to "tag" it

Hi, I was wondering why some external links were deleted from the site? I think one may have seemed redundant, but not all of them. One was a book publisher, one was a Japanese site (Roller Game with video and photos)and one was an American Roller Derby site (ARDL Bay City Bombers also with video, mention and photos)two were Yahoo! Groups sites: Ann Calvello and Joan Weston. Going to those sites also verifies the info is correct and not made up.

  • Information that is used to write the article should be in a "references" section rather than the external links. However, I doubt Yahoo groups are considered reliable sources. Remember that Wikipedia isn't about linking as much sites as possible. The external links should offer more detailed information about the subject that couldn't be included in the article and generally video/picture sites aren't the type of links usually looked for. Perhaps Wikipedia:External links will provide you with the info you need? - Mgm|(talk) 07:24, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
  • I removed the non-links from the "External links" section. In other words, the only things I removed were those that weren't actual links. I wouldn't even have looked twice if they had been links to an external site, but they weren't. Personally, I agree with Mgm that Yahoo groups aren't really reliable sources but if they had been linked I wouldn't have removed them. I hope that answers your question. You could possibly block the &action= and &edit= sections and leave the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/insert page title here which is for when viewing a page alone.   • What governs the size of the picture you're importing? (how do you control the size)
  • When Wikipedia prints photographs from a private source, do they become Wiki's copyright or does the source retain copyright?

The size of images on pages is determined per page. Upload the file with its original resolution (don't shrink it). You can scale the image down on the article you wish to insert it in.

The source/owner retains all copyrights (unless it's public domain) and licences the media for use on Wikipedia (and related projects).
* How may we credit the photographer?
When you click on Upload file, just put the details of the author/owner in the Summary field as well as the licenses used.
* How do you obtain copyright permissions for copyrighted photographs?
Due to the fact that Wikipedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, and that articles are freely copied, Wikipedia does not allow the use of copyrighted images unless they meet the fair use rationale.

A minor technical aside—all GFDL content is copyrighted, too. All of Wikipedia is, in fact. The GFDL just a license which specifies the terms and conditions under which other people may duplicate and redistribute this copyrighted material. You must first download the image from the web site to your own computer (e.g. to your desktop, but anywhere will do). Then you fill in the location of the file on your computer. The easiest way to do that is to click the Browse button to find it. Notinasnaid 20:16, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I followed the instructions on writing an article.I completed the edit/summary. The article was entitled Zbark. The reason for this is that it is a term used in Wikipedia when you search for Flat Fee. Here is the article: Zbark: An entirely new Real Estate Brokerage business model that replaces the outdated listing commissions of the 20th Century. The model helps consumers that are buying and/or selling real estate. It puts the consumer in control of the buying/selling process rather than a real estate agent and/or broker. It is a fee based system rather than a commission system.

Here is where the term Zbark is quoted in Wikipedia: Real Estate

A way that homeowners can list their property on a local MLS (Multiple Listing Service) and www.Realtor.com for one fee. This is a radical departure from the listing commission that is usually associated with a homeowner selling their property. The homeowner may or may not choose to pay a Buyer's Agent (a real estate agent) whom brings the homeowner a contract. Hi, should wikilinks of characters' or people be in bold? For example, should a wikilink for Mr. George Jones be in bold? I read the Manual of Style, but I didn't find anything relating to fictional characters. An annonymous user bolded the names at [7]

If these names are already in use, you shouldn't try to overwrite the images already there. Instead, if you are uploading a file with the same name, modify the file name in some way, perhaps by adding your Wikipedia username (or a shortened form thereof) to it (as I have done with Image:Pennine Way Sign Andh.jpg) or the width or height of the image in pixels. The simple answer is that Google Earth images are commercial and cannot be used in Wikipedia. Nasa may have public domain alternative images on the internet, I'm not sure where to check.

Hi, I was working through some of the articles for deletion and was looking at some of the articles promoting web sites. They often evidently fail WP:WEB but sometimes in the vote, alexa traffic rankings are used as implications of notability. If a website cannot be differentiated by WP:WEB or other means, what kind of traffic ranking would we consider notable? Do we have to take into account the whole "Alexa toolbar users only" thing? WP:WEB is only a guideline. People are free to use it as a guideline to establish notability, but can use whatever criteria they choose if they feel its notable enough for some other reason. They have to be prepared to defend their reason, and a high traffic rank is usually a pretty easily defendable thing. If it shows in the top 100,000 websites (Which is what Alexa will show in graphs) you're probably not going to get an article that easily deleted unless there are other problems with it (OR, blatant advertisting, etc) at which point many people will call for clean-up rather than delete. --Crossmr 02:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
  • If you know of another way to reliably measure the amount of unqique visitors to a site, you're welcome to use that too. I'm writing an article on a japanese person, however in the naming portion, I don't know how to write japanese symbols. Could someone please help? And also, how do you create new categories? --Summonmaster13 01:00 25 June 2006 (UTC)

The easiest way is if you can find it online, just copy and paste it. Otherwise, you'll need to use an IME. For Windows, you can download it someplace on the microsoft site, just search for Japanese IME. You'll also need asian character support installed. Look in control panel -> regional settings. That's just to see them at all, if you can see them, you have that part. If you're using Mac, OSX comes with built in support for writing Japanese I believe, you'd have to search the help to find out how to use it. Once IME is installed, it's a bit nonintuitive - you have to set it to writing in japanese, and there's a few settings, that I've never been able to read as I can't read Japanese, so I just click them til it works. When typing, every syllable you write will then convert into kana. If you want kanji, hit space while the right part is underlined (which it does as you type). -Goldom ‽‽‽ 01:29, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
If you are unsure about what Japanese characters to use, you can ask at Wikipedia:Japan-related topics notice board as well. To create a new category just include [[category:new category]] on a page you want in the new category. This will show up as a red category link, and then you can click this and add at least [[category:parent of new category]] to the category (to link it in to the category structure). There are a LOT of categories, so you might want to look around and make sure the category you're creating doesn't already exist. I was just looking at the Awareness Statistics and I found that Wikipedia's daily ranking dropped down to 30. I don't see how it's possible for the rankings to drop to a yearly low in Mid-June. Is the alexa ranking going to start decreasing now?

I created the image Image:Muse.svg yesterday from Muse Logo.png using Inkscape. I saved it as an "Inkscape SVG". It showed up perfectly on my computer using Inkscape and Internet Explorer. When I uploaded it, it showed a red X. I then resaved it as a "Plain SVG" and uploaded it again. The same thing happened. Does anyone know what the problem is? Your file is just an SVG wrapper with a link to the original PNG image. If you think about it, that makes sense--there's no way Inkscape could look at the PNG bitmap and figure out how to redraw it in the vector format SVG uses. So you didn't really redo the Muse logo as SVG, you just created an SVG file that consists mainly of a pointer to the original image. And since the URL in that link is just "Muse.png" it won't work except from within one particular directory on whatever machine contains Muse.png. · rodii · 16:59, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

I recently created an article, but it was labled as a copywright infringement, because I copied it from another website. I don't get what's wrong with that. Doesn't Wikipedia use the GFDL liscense?

GFDL means all information in wikipedia are published using GFDL only. However, information from other sources are licensed according to their copyright policy.   • Yes, Wikipedia uses the GFDL, but in all likelyhood the other site doesn't. Text that isn't released under a free license like the GFDL or a compatible Creative Commons license is not free. Copying it would basically be stealing from whoever wrote or owns the work. See Copyright (note the spelling) it's a about 'rights' not 'writing'. I have a nice big welcome message from an Admin on my User:Talk page. I'd like to move it to a subpage of my User:Talk but I want to do it the right way, including the edit history of the welcome message?

I know that if I cut and past Wiki content I would lost the history. If I use Rename will that turn my main Talk page into a big redirect, or could it still be used as a Talk page?

Is there some kind of Wikipedia convention for articles concerning how many spaces should follow the period that ends a sentence? Thanks.

In HTML, any sequence of whitespace characters (including spaces) is collapsed to just one space. So it doesn't matter whether you use one or two spaces after a period in normal text, it will be rendered as one (which is the correct behavior). There is an article (specifically Knights of the Dinner Table) which both seems to contain factual inacuraccy, and (undisputably) contains plagiarism. How should it be tagged? Mo-Al 23:37, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Try using {{subst:disputed}} and {{subst:fact}}. The first one is a boilerplate template, so place it at the start of the section/article in question. The second is for adding after an uncited "fact" in an article.
Make sure you're not treading on too many toes before adding the templates by checking the talk page of the article first.

Thought I'd ask a question for once: I've rather cunningly managed to intercourse my signature coding up and can't seem to fix it. You might want to try using Fraps, you can take as many screenshots as you want then without alt+tabbing back to Windows. They are automatically saved in compressed file formats, with the game name and time in the filename. Hello, We created an article some weeks ago on Zak Martin, and it has now disappeared. Can you please tell us why this article was removed, and/or restore it? In addition to being the founder of our organization, Zak Martin is a leading New Age figure, author and antiwar activist. Our intention was to gradually add information to the biographical article we created. Now the original article has disappeared, and in its place is a page with the message "Wikipedia does not have an article with this name". Please advise. According to the deletion log the article was deleted for being a copy-vio. Meaning the contents of the page where copied from somewhere that didn't release the rights to it in standards with the GFDL. If you need anything drop a message. Yanksox (talk) 03:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
A quick Googling does seem to suggest that the subject is notable per WP:BIO and WP:NN, and so if you should recreate the article in a fashion that does not infringe on copyright and is compliant with the GFDL, you should be good to go (in the alternative, if the text you added was from a webpage that either you or the organization with which you're affiliated has created and owns, the situation is slightly different, and you may surely prepare the article for recreation and then ask someone for help). Last year, I made an addition to the entry for "bric-a-brac". In addition to the meaning that is there on the wikipedia, in sewing terms it's also a type of decorative trim. I've had a look and it seems that a different editor disagreed with it being there. You have two (well three) options - (1) edit it back in, (2) discuss it on the talk page for that entry or (3) ask the user who removed it on their userpage the reasons behind their removal. I would recommend (2) & (3) first. The editor who removed your entry was Zora http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Zora and gave the reason "(Those are embroidered decorative tapes, not bric-a-brac)". You can see this for yourself by clicking on the button labeled "history" on the actual entrypage.

(it's also useful to sign stuff - by clicking the signature button (3rd button from the right).

If you messed up when editing an existing page, you should revert. See the text above the table of contents on the page WP:RV.
