Helmuth Reymann

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On March 6 1945 Generalleutnant Helmuth Reymann was the third person to be appointed command of the Berlin Defense Area by Adolf Hitler, in advance preparation of a Soviet invasion of the capital.

Reymann had reportedly urged Hitler to allow evacuating of the underage population of Berlin to precede the fighting, but was rebuffed.

On April 15th Reymann met with Albert Speer and Gotthard Heinrici to discuss the scorched earth policy that Speer was campaigning against, although Reymann refused to side with Speer - but promised to confer with Heinrici before destroying vital city infrastructure.

On April 22nd, Hitler ordered Reymann to be replaced by Colonel Ernst Kaether, although a day later reneged and instead commuted Helmuth Weidling's death sentence, and made him the new commander.
