Hellespont Fairfax

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hellespont Fairfax is the largest double-hulled supertanker in the world. The oil tanker was constructed in South Korea's Daewoo yard in 2002, flies a Greek flag and is registered with the Marshall Islands.

The Hellespont Shipping Corporation of Greece is a deep-sea shipping company specialized in the carriage of crude oil. The company is based in Piraeus and has agency operations in London and Manila. It operates four vessels: the Hellespont Alhambra, the Hellespont Metropolis, the Hellespont Tara and the Fairfax. The vessels elevate standards for large tanker strength and speed and have a number of unusual features, including full-time inerting of the ballast spaces for safety and corrosion protection, and a white paint system to protect internal coatings.

The four tankers are notable for being built to a high specification. For example, their relatively high service speed (16.5 knots laden, 17.5 knots in ballast) increases their earning capacity and provides charterers with greater operational flexibility. The steel scantlings are greater than the class minimum. Efforts are also made to extend the life of coatings in the ballast tanks. This is helped by the double-scrubbing system supplying drier inert gas to the ballast tanks, and also by the white hull reflecting the sun’s energy. Keeping down the cargo temperatures also minimizes hydrocarbon emissions.

The Hellespont Fairfax was bought in 2004 by the Overseas Shipping Group and renamed the TI Oceania. It now sails under a Belgian flag. The two other ships have been renamed TI Asia and TI Europe.

The Hellespont Fairfax was the subject of an episode of The Science Channel's television show Superships, entitled "Launching a Leviathan—Hellespont Fairfax".
