The Helghast are the main enemy in the game Killzone. A humanoid race with a passion for vengeance and hardship, they are led by Scolar Visari and General Lente and have a striking appearance, based on a Fascist-like army. They were assisted in the Vekta Wars by General Adams.
[edit] History
It is sometime in the future and humanity has colonized many planets. One group of people attempt to colonize the outlying world of Helghan. However, the world is extremely desolate and the air scorches the colonists lungs. Also present in the atmosphere is heavy radiation, which causes the colonists' hair to fall out and their children to be born deformed; the average Helghan is taller than a normal human. In time, the colonists' bodies adapt, allowing them to breathe the caustic air. The hardship they have endured has changed them so much, they can no longer be classified as human. They are larger, tougher and harbour a burning hatred for mankind who sent them to Helghast. This hatred led to the first Helghan war. But the Helghast were beaten and forced back to Helghan. Eventually, a strong leader emerges, Scolar Visari, who convinces the Helghast to take revenge on humanity once more. And so, the invasion is underway, and the first target is an ISA planet called Vekta. The ISA have built a number of defense platforms on several planets. These were designed to stop the Helghast from attacking any planets and were supposed to be foolproof. But as the Helghast attacked Vekta, the weapons on the platform malfunctioned, leaving Vekta open to an attack the citizens were told could never happen.
[edit] Profile
- Light Soldiers - The weakest of all the Helghast, but also the fastest.
- Base Soldiers - The most common type of Helghast but rarely found alone or even in pairs.
- Elite Soldiers - These appear later in the game and are typically armed with light machine guns and are very strong. They are often found with Base Soldiers.
- Assault Soldiers - Also appearing later, these are much tougher than Elites but slow moving due to their distinctive armour, which makes them incredibly resistant to damage.
- Base Commanders - These are as strong as an Elite but are very rare, and appear to help raise troop morale.
- Bodyguards - Only seen almost at the end of the game, the Bodyguards are the strongest enemy in the game. They are intelligent, seek cover when injured and look for opportunities to ambush the player.
- Sentry Bots - These flying gun platforms attack you with dual machineguns. They are not well-armoured but can be hard to hit because of their lateral movement. They are encountered about half way through the game.
- Bounty Hunter - Only appears once in the game, when Templar and his team encounter a heavily defended beacon. The Bounty Hunter (as referred to on the Vekta Today website) uses a laser designator to co-ordinate artillery onto the team, but is about as tough as a Base Soldier.
- Attack Dogs* - Helghast Attack Dogs are being introduced in Killzone: Liberation for the PSP. These dogs will feature similar armor to those of the regular Helghast, and will even include the orange goggles, adjusted for dogs' eyes.
[edit] Major characters
[edit] General Lente
General Lente is the Commander-in-Chief of the Helghast Third Army, directly under the command of Scolar Visari. Lente led the Helghan First Assault Division into Planet Vekta, and stormed several beachheads. Lente is extremely devoted to leading the Helghan Army into the right direction. He despises humans, and has Fascist beliefs. When he is finally defeated by the ISA squad (Templar, Luger, Hakkha, Rico) he tells Hakkha of how Hakkha's brother was just like him: sentimental to humans, and how Lente killed him because of that. Upon hearing this, Hakkha shoots Lente. He is voiced by Steven Berkoff.
[edit] Scolar Visari
Scolar Visari is leader of the Helghast Empire. He is the man directly responsible for the re-militarization of the Helghan troops after their defeat following the First Helghan War. Has succeeded in launching an invasion of one of Earth's colonial planets, Vekta, to avenge what he sees as the abandonment and abuse of the Helghast. In the first Killzone, he is voiced by Brian Cox.
[edit] Trivia
- Amongst players, "Bucketheads" is a popular pejorative for the Helghast, in reference to their distinct headgear.
