Helgafell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helgafell is an inactive volcano on the icelandic island Heimaey. Helgafell's last eruption was 6000 years ago. Next to Helgafell lies the active volcano Eldfell, whose last eruption was in 1973.
Helgafell, or holy mountain, is also the name of a small mountain in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula of Iceland. The mountain is 73 metres high and a temple in honor of Þór was built here by Helgafell's first settler, Þórólfur Mostraskegg. Helgafell also appears in the Laxdaela saga as the location where the heroine Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir last lived and is supposedly where she is buried. The mountain is also mentioned in the Eyrbyggja saga. There is no know person to look down this Template:Volcanoe but from what most people guess is that it is still black down there.
