[edit] Summary

Produced by Patrick Edwin Moran. This composite photograph is intended to support an analogical explanation of the thinking behind Werner Heisenberg's thought experiment commonly called "Heisenberg's Microscope." See his Physics and Philosophy, p. 47-48 for details. The photograph presented here is intended to represent the nucleus of an atom, an electron in orbit, and the electron being struck by a highly energetic particle. Heisenberg anticipates what the next photo would show: "The second step shows a wave pocket moving not around the nucleus but away from the atom, because the first light quantum will have knocked the electron out ofrom the atom."
