[edit] Adding runners-up and semi-finalists to Miss Universe titleholder articles

Hi Hedwig...

I just want to suggest that adding lists of runners-up and semi-finalists to the Miss Universe titleholder articles is not entirely appropriate and I am considering reverting such edits. I have brought this up at the talk page for Wikiproject Beauty Pageants, and you are welcome to have your say.

Congrats on getting started with Miss Universe 2005. May I suggest a couple of things in future... for one, try copying the exact wikicoding for each country, then you'll get it coming out like I've been doing to Miss Universe 2004. There's people among us who seem hellbent on getting the flags in there, and so this is an easy way to approach it. The third thing is that it spaces it out more and gives mroe information, try Santa Banta if you needs ages and heights (the exact link you need is there... simply advance through each delegate). Try not to use every single name the delegate owns, just the most commonly used ones are necessary. The most important thing is to try and figure out which delegates have their own articles and wikilink them in... this takes a bit of detective work but it is pretty important! Likewise you need to link in countries that have articles relating to the national pageant using a pipe, for example Femina Miss India, Miss USA and Miss Brasil.
Please don't take this as major criticism, I mean it to be constructive because you've obviously shown yourself to be keen and useful editor :) Also, please do not hesitate to contact me through my talk page if you have further queries.
Happy editing! -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 08:53, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Articles/Pages for Miss Universe 2004-backwards

Good day! I want to continue contributing for the beauty pageant title most especially for the Miss Universe pageant, but I have seen, only from Miss Universe 2004 page only exists not 2003 backwards (I hope you got it). And Im willing to contribute information as much as possible but there's a problem. I have a hard time finding information for the pageant 2003-backwards (i.e. the delegates, special awards). Hope you could provide me good sources. Im continuing the page Miss Universe 2004. (By the way, thank you for appreciating my works by giving me the The Barnstar of High Culture :). I really appreciate it) Hedwig0407 28 July 2006

You're doing great :) The best place to find information is Pageant Almanac which has the special awards and semi-finalist lists. As for delegate lists - Miss Universe Crystal Ball has those but it can be tricky because the site has often exceeded its bandwidth. The trick is to use Google's cache - you don't get the images but you do get the delegate names. Here are a few to start you off with if you don't know how to do this: Miss Universe 2003 delegates,Miss Universe 2002 delegates, Miss Universe 2001 delegates. Again, you're always welcome to contact me if you get stuck :) -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 06:13, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I always stuck at Pageant Almanac, I cant find the link for the Miss Univers 2005-backwards, always the 2006 page. I'll try those sounds really tricky sources that you gave me. Hedwig0407 28 July 2006

Ok, thanks! I use those sources, thanks! Hope my internet connection wont jammed. Ok, concentrating contributing for the Miss Universe pages.. Hedwig0407 28 July 2006

[edit] Getting more info

In reply to your message on my talk page...

And on second thought there is another, more tricky but more reliable way of getting some of the details. By using the Internet Archive (link) you can actually access old versions of the Miss Universe website. Its tricky because most of this information is entered as images which are not always available and will appear as red x's. However, its worth a try... go here and use the scroll-bar at the top to go throught he countries... not all are available but if you get to one which you can't access, copy the url and paste it into the internet archive search engine and see if you can access it from another date. -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 06:19, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Here's the link to the 2003 pages (but again, its a bit tenuous and you won't always find what you want. Good luck! -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 06:24, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pageant Almanac

If you go to the link I gave you before here you should be able to find what you need. Scroll down... but here are the links anyway: Semi-finalists, Award Winners, Scorecard (all the televised scores 1978-2002). -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 06:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Good job in providing some info for each Miss Universe edition and your plan to further that to those pre-2004. I can offer my help in creating the maps, and I am currently creating a template linking all Miss Universe-related articles, wherein I can already provide you a link to blank pages for each edition. Joey80 09:24, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Here is the template: Template:Miss Universe
Hi! If you have any plans of completing the editions of all Miss Universe, a great reference is [1], which also contains pictures. Also, for the 1953 edition, a list of finalists is available in the winner's article: Christiane Martel. Hence, provided that the 1953 section is up (which will be in a while), then I think this section in the biography article is worth removing. Thanks. Joey80 14:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh by the way, aside from opening new pages for Miss Universe, don't forget to also update some flags. For example, Venezuela used changed its flag only in 2006, so a different flag design should be displayed previous to that year, Puerto Rico changed the hue of the blue color in its flag in 1995, while Hong Kong used a different flag before its handover to China. And don't forget that South Africa's flag until the early 1990s is different from the one today. Thanks. Joey80 07:56, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
I alread started editing the flags. There might be some problems in the Miss Universe 1995. I changed the number of delegates to 82 in the heading, from 81 before. And I removed Lebanon's delegate from the List since pageantopolis' source doesn't have a Lebanese entry. Also, there was no top 5 then, only a top 6, in which case, you are lacking the Venezuelan delegate to complete the top 6 (I corrected this already). Joey80 08:32, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
I got your message and I am already done updated the flags from 1995 onward. And just a note, the Venezuelan delegate was missed in the contestants list in 2000, but I already fixed that. Just a suggestion for the other Miss Universe articles, you might want to use the "template texts, flags, etc." of the Miss Universe 1994 section. I am almost done editing the flags there, and hence, if you use it, editing the flags might no longer be a problem. Although South Africa did not send a delegate in 1994, the flag preceding the year should be [[Image:Flag of South Africa 1928-1994.svg|20px]] Joey80 08:49, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
In case you might run into some problems with information, you can get it at www.pageantopolis.com This site has yearly information of almost every major beauty pageant. Once again, I am asking you to please use the appropriate flags once you open new Miss Universe articles. The goal here is not just to present the correct candidate's name. For Wikipedia is not just about the text, but also the visuals used--hence, this must also be correct. What is disappointing here is that such corrections have already been mentioned, and thus, the problem can be minimized or avoided already (i.e. as I mentioned before, you can already use a corrected "text template" for it, instead of the problems concerning these further multiplying once a new page is opened). Think about it, I could be editing other articles, instead of spending hours just correcting the flags and links to national pageants of every Miss Universe editions articles opened. And what is frustrating here is that you make the same corrections on every edition... Joey80 05:57, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Naming Conventions

Hi Hedwig! I just want to give you a big thumbs up for all the effort you've put into the Miss Universe articles... it seems every time I check a few more have appeared! And they're a big job, too... anyway I would just like to ask that you keep an eye on using "excess" names... some of the delegates in the articles have 4+ names and in most cases this should be cut back to two or three... whatever the most common usage is. In some cases it is difficult to sort out but I find Pageant Almanac a good source for this (use their "Parade of Nations" page).

The wikipedia guideline on this is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) so you might want to check that out! I've already started culling names... see this as an example.

Most importantly... keep up the good work! -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 09:25, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Just a reminder to watch out for over-long names! For example you've called Miss Peru 1987 "Jessica Patricia Newton Sáez" where her common name is simply "Jessica Newton". I don't mind removing names from articles that have already been created but when you're creating new ones (which are incredibly impressive, btw) its frustrating to see it still happening. As a rule of thumb, two is great, three is okay but look to see if you can bring it down to two, four is in most cases too many and you need to look for the alternative (another example... Miss Venezuela 2000 is commonly called "Claudia Moreno" but you had "Claudia Cristina Moreno Gonzalez" which is quite a mouthful!) -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 23:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Well I didn't want it to become a major... just something to think about as you put them in if at all possible. Don't worry about going back and correcting other ones at the moment unless you really want to... I've done quite a few already (check the page histories) and am willing to fix the rest. -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 01:40, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other articles

Well you don't need to ask mine (or anyones) permission to create an article but that sounds like a good idea! Perhaps suggest it to Joey, who has been actively making similar "trivia"-style pages for Miss Universe... he's more likely to have a good idea as to where to put it. -- PageantUpdatertalk | contribs | esperanza 08:04, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess it is a good idea to have a page wholly devoted to the trivias related to Miss Universe, which means also moving the entries in that article to the new page. This will make the Miss Universe page more manageable, since the fever and excitement tend to increase whenever the event takes place, hence, similar to this year's, the Miss Universe article got longer than usual, owing largely to repetitive information and other seemingly mundane trivias. For a simple user who might just need an overview of what the pageant is all about, looking at that article might be overwhelming when he/she gets bombarded with useless information that will not necessarily help him/her. In a way, this is similar to the arrangement done for the FIFA World Cup 2006 page, which I fully support. The editors there moved some sections which tend to get long and information-loaded to new pages and just leave the gist of what the event is all about in the main article. This arrangement, I think, should also be applied to the Miss Universe article. We can then include a "Trivia" link in the template once the page is opened. Also, we might need an additional page for the special awards winners (tables listing the winners for Ms. Photogenic, Congeniality, National Costume, etc.). Joey80 13:31, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nanc Drew (computer game, books)

Remember Category:Nancy Drew books Also if you are just creating stub write a first sentence e.g The Haunted Bridge is book 35 of the Nancy drew novels. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:39, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Ok sorry I have seen some of your others and realise now you are quite capable. Its such I figured even in the inital entry you would just category and inital sentence it. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:46, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Painting

I'm also interested in the project. Right now we need:

  1. infoboxes for paintings
  2. templates for the talk pages

I have no idea of how to make either.--201 21:23, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

I can barely believe how un developed the project is. It's so sad compared to how well developed projects like anime and manga or tv are.--201 02:14, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

We have the user template. There is a notice template and another for stubs. Some wikiprojects have lots of templates.--201 00:41, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
