Heaton Manor

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heaton Manor School is a comprehensive 11 - 18 school in High Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was formed in 1984, from an amalgamation of two separate schools. Until 2004 the school was split site - Years 7, 8, 9, 12 & 13 were on the 'Jesmond' site, between Jesmond Park West and Newton Road and Years 10 & 11 were on the 'Benton' site opposite what is locally known as 'The Ministry' (now HM Revenue & Customs and Department for Work & Pensions offices)

[edit] The Jesmond Site

The Jesmond site on Newton Road was opened in 1928 by King George V after he opened the Tyne Bridge. The building contained two fully separate schools, Heaton Grammar School for Boys and Heaton High School for Girls. Heaton Grammar was on the west side of the building and Heaton High was on the east.

[edit] The Benton Site

Across on Benton Road was Manor Park Secondary Modern School opened in 1960 (itself having two sites, the lower site being off Chillingham Road which is now the Heaton Adult Education Centre).

[edit] Heaton Secondary School

Heaton Grammar and Heaton High merged in 1967 to form Heaton Secondary School.

With Newcastle City Council's budget cuts meant that schools with low numbers had to be closed and it was decided to merge Heaton Secondary and Manor Park in 1984 to form a new school - hence Heaton Manor School. It was a controversial move, as many people saw Heaton Secondary school still as a grammar school and to be seen merging with a secondary modern school as a downward progression.

[edit] Heaton Manor School today

In 2004, the Benton site was closed and soon after demolished, whilst the Jesmond site also suffered the same fate, but was fully rebuilt as a fully modern complex from PFI funding. The school decided to move into the future, after declaring its buildings unfit for 21st century education.

Below is a table of the headteachers from 1997 onwards:

Until 1997 1997 - 1998 1998 - Present
Peter Illingworth Michael Nesbitt John Dryden
Steve Wilkinson (Acting)

The former Benton site is now a housing estate, simply called Manor Park after the former school.
