Hearthound

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hearthounds are a fictional creature in Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. They are an over-sized dog-like animal that has a connection to the underworld, the world of the dead. They have tan colored hair almost like that of a deer. The Hearthound is so large one bit a man in the chest who was mounted on a horse.

The origin of the name hearthound is in debate. It is either due to their large heart-shaped ears or due to their ability to used those ears to track their prey by listening to their prey's heartbeat.

The Hearthound is seen in book 1, Wizard's First Rule, and book 7, The Pillars of Creation, but are missing for some reason from book 8, Naked Empire, despite their having been a strong underworld connection explained in that book. This may be due to the different method the underworld connection was removed.
