Health Sciences Centre (Winnipeg)

The Health Sciences Centre is the largest hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It serves the residents of Northwest Ontario and Nunavut as both a teaching hospital and as a research center. The University of Manitoba has its Faculty of Medicine located on the 32 acre (13 hectare) campus. The university's Faculty of Pharmacy is soon to locate to the campus as well.

The Health Sciences Centre was established in 1973 by the government of Manitoba. It combined the Winnipeg General Hospital, The Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg, The Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital and the D.A. Stewart Centre (Respiratory Hospital) into a campus with one administration. The Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (CancerCare Manitoba) also joined the campus.

In 2000, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority took over the Health Sciences Centre as an operating division of the authority.

In 2006, HSC announced a hotel addition connected to the hospital. It would be first of its kind in Canada. The tower, built and operated by Manitoba's largest hotel chain Canad Inns, will open in 2008. Once complete, it will be one of the tallest buildings in Winnipeg rising 19 stories over the hospital. The hotel would sit immediately beside the $25-million Siemens Institute for Advanced Medicine, a project announced in June 2005, The 100,000-square-foot centre that focus on neuroscience, infectious disease, advanced imaging and medical information. It's expected to house 300 researchers and staff and attract visiting physicians from across the country.
