Surely this is not the case, my Hayes Smartmodem 300 used AT commands?
[edit] ATS2=255
It's not a really well-known fact, but on many modems, register S2 controls which character is the escape character. The default is 33, +. However, 255 is a special case. ATS2=255 disables the escape system entirely. This eliminates the problem of embedded +++ sequences. To hang up while in this mode, you drop the DTR signal on the serial port. There is no way to enter command mode while connected with escapes disabled, but most applications of modems have no use for this other than hanging up. -- Myria 06:47, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
