From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Haymarket Theatre is a theatre in Leicester, England, based in the Haymarket Centre on Belgrave Gate in Leicester City Centre. It is due to close in 2006 or 2007 along with the Phoenix Arts centre when the new performing arts centre opens.
The venue closed briefly from 2003 to 2004 due to financial problems.
Leicester Haymarket Theatre has just announced its latest programme of events, which runs from 3 October 2006 until 28 January 2007. With some performances already sold out, this season is already proving to be very popular.
Highlights of the theatre’s final season include Nigel Havers in Daphne Du Maurier’s classic Rebecca; Pauline Moran, known to TV fans as Hercule Poirot’s sidekick Miss Lemon, in the moving South African thriller Bones, which also features live music by Joe Legwabe of Ladysmith Black Mambazo fame; Simon Ward in Jerome K Jerome’s hilarious story Three Men in a Boat; a stage version of the hit novel Captain Correlli's Mandolin; and the Haymarket Theatre’s brand new Christmas production The Wizard of Oz, featuring Helena Blackman from the BBC’s TV show ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’ as Dorothy and Ceri Dupree from ‘Hot Stuff’ as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Organisers expect thousands of people to pack into the old building to bid a final farewell to the theatre before it closes its doors for good in January and moves to the brand new venue on Rutland Street.
The new 1,200-seat venue, currently under construction, will feature an impressive five-storey open-plan foyer, two theatres, cafe, three bars, dance and recording studios and two rehearsal spaces. It is due to open in 2008.
Paul Kerryson, artistic director at the Haymarket Theatre, said: "This final season is a good send off for the Haymarket, with an eclectic mix of names, musicals and touring shows.”
