Hayley Matthews

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Councillor Hayley Matthews is a British Liberal Democrat politician. Together with Chris Leaman and Sami Hashmi, Matthews has represented the Mapesbury ward on Brent Council since May 2006. She is a member of the Health Select Committee, and also takes a particular interest in youth issues.

Matthews joined the Liberal Democrats after becoming dissilusioned with Labour's public service reforms, which she considers to have had a particular impact on disadvantaged areas such as Brent, and decided to stand for Brent Council becasue she wanted more young women to be involved with local decision making. Like local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather, Matthews has been working to clean up Brent. She is firmly opposed to the council tax, and has also campaigned against top-up fees and the Iraq war.

Following the resignation of Charles Kennedy, Matthews supported Menzies Campbell in his successful leadership election campaign. She is Brent's youngest councillor.
