Hayami Gyoshu

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hayami Gyoshu (速水御舟, b. 2 August 1894 d. 20 March 1935) was a Japanese painter in the nihonga style. He was active during the Taisho and Showa eras.

Hayami was born in Asakusa, Tokyo in 1894. From his thoroughly worked, realistic and detailed portrayals, which had not featured in nihonga at the time, he proceeded toward decorative and symbolic expression such as in the painting 炎舞, which would eventually become a famous work. Many paintings remain from his relatively short life, including 名樹散椿, the first piece of art from the Showa period to be assigned "object of national cultural significance" status. He died suddenly from typhoid fever in 1935 at the age of 41.
