Hauppauge, New York
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hauppauge (pronounced /hɔphɔg/) is a hamlet in the Town of Islip and the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Its name means "land of High Water" in the true Native American definition of the word Hauppauge. The term "Land Of Sweet Water" was found to be false, and "Land Of High Water" was found to be true because there was a lack of knowledge of the Native American languages at the time of the town's naming. Since there was an ignorance of those languages, the name stuck. The Native Americans defined the town as the "Land Of High Water" as Hauppauge used to have many lakes and swamps. Today, Hauppauge still has a small number of lakes, and a few swamps scattered about due to the high residential demand for property a good majority--if not most-- have been wiped out and built over for housing purposes. Another notable fact is that Hauppauge remains the head of the Nissequogue River.
The Hauppauge Industrial Park, located at the edge of the hamlet, is the largest on Long Island, and by some accounts the second largest in the nation. The park has over 1,300 companies, and employs over 55,000 Long Islanders. The companies in the industrial park provide the tax revenue that makes up the bulk of the Hauppauge school district's budget. As a result, school taxes for residents are relatively low, while the budget for schools is actually higher than usual. It is noted for its well funded schools, with multiple internet-accessible computers in every classroom, many after school activities, etc.
