Hauländer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hauländer were German settlers on estates in eastern Prussian provinces before 1807, notably in South Prussia and New East Prussia. Their land contracts with the noble landowners followed Dutch practices which implied certain freedoms not enjoyed by neighboring serfs. Settlers on royal crownlands were called Kolonisten.

The term is derived from hollandry (Polish: Olendry), a form of local government named after Dutch settlers who arrived in Poland in centuries prior.[1]
