From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hatakeyama Yoshitsuna (畠山 義綱?) (1536-1594) the lord of Noto province during the Sengoku Period of the 16th century. At the age of 16 Yoshitsuna succeeded Hatakeyama Yoshitsugu. Through this a council of seven retainers were formed throughout the Hatakeyama that were determined to use Yoshitsuna as one of their puppets. To create rifts within the council Yoshitsuna and his father both worked quietly. They ended up finding Igawa Mitsunobu, an ally whom they had appointed to the council in 1554 following the death of an original member. Civil war erupted within the clan due to the fact of an attempt to raise the power of Yoshitsuna. Around the year of 1566 Yoshitsuna was forced to flee to the Omi province through not being able to withstand his opposing retainers. Yoshitsuna's son, Yoshitaka ended up being overthrown himself following the year of 1574. This prompted Uesugi Kenshin to attack Noto. Hatakeyama Yoshiharu, the brother of Yoshitsuna went on to serve as a retainer under the Uesugi in which he became better known as Jojo Masashige.
