[edit] Comment
Hi, Welcome. I asked to get a copy of the "Sat/Tan Satanism", so that I might see whether an encyclopaedic article could be made. If you can help make it encyclopaedic please do help by making changes!
There certainly are a number of hits but unfortunately, I've found almost none from a verifiable source such as a university publication, journalist, etc. which would prove that it was not just made up by a few students on a cold afternoon! So, -unless anything else turns up, it would appear that Sat/Tan is doomed!
However, I have however found several hits for "Satanic Reds" (no wiki article) and "first church of Satan" (there is a Wiki article) and I've found at least one academic source that mentions the satanic reds mentions satanic reds! Controversial New religions ISBN-10: 0-19-515682-X
A quick look at "first church of Satan" shows that it too is likely to get a call for deletion at some point. --Mike 15:09, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
PS. Name, I was concerned that "Sat/Tan" would cause problems as a name for Wikipedia as it would actually be a file called "tan" in the "sat" folder (I think). If possible Sat/Tan would be better--Mike 15:15, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] START
Sat/Tan Satanism is a form of Satanism based on a presumed etymology of Satan from the Sanskrit words "sat" (said to mean "pure existence") and "tan" (said to mean "stretching forth"). Unlike other forms of Satanism, which are, part of the Judeo-Christian God-Satan dualism, "Sat/Tan" Satanists see themselves are resurrecting a pre-Judaic "supreme force".
There are various kinds of Satanists in modern society. The main trends can be (adequately but not completely) summarized into:
- Sat/Tan, the Dark Doctrines type Satanism
- Setian Satanism
- LaVeyan Satanism
- Other forms (e.g., some Gnostic sects, Order of Nine Angles)
Sat/Tan Satanism also known as Dark Doctrine Satanism is a quasi-philosophical/quasi-theological brand of Satanism which maintains both religious and non-religious philosophical influences.
[edit] Dark Doctrine
(Deistic?) Satanists are like LaVeyans, in that they do not believe that Satan is a person or being. Instead they believe that Satan is an impersonal supreme being or force. They agree the LaVeyans and use the same terminology of the "Dark Force in Nature", but they focus less on the teaching of LaVey more on what they term "the Dark Doctrines".
The "Dark Doctrines" or Sat/Tan form of Satanism comes from a belief that the word "Satan" derives from outwith the Judeo-Christian tradition. This is essentially a etymological hypothesis derived from the Vedanta[verification needed] school of Hinduism in which the Boundless Darkness or Pure Being is said to be the Sanskrit word "Sat" and the stretching forth of this to become all things is said to be "Tan". [edit] Churches
The primary two churches according to Geifodd ap Pwyll which teach Deistic Satanism are the First Church of Satan in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Satanic Reds (who are also, interestingly enough, a Communist group).
[edit] First Church of Satan
(I've no evidence that they come under this Sat/Tan heading, nor "dark doctrine")
The First Church of Satan was founded in October 1994, as a breakaway church from the "Church of Satan" by John Allee. [2] There are several noticeable differences in the organization of the First Church of Satan (FCoS) compared to the Church of Satan (CoS). Chief amongst them is the lack of any sort of hierarchy: the FCoS believes that individuality must be encouraged, and that attempts to bury it beneath titles is a terrible thing. For this reason, there is essentially no hierarchy within the FCoS, though there are titles ("High Priest/ess" for the Allees, "Priest" for others).
[edit] Satanic Reds
In 1974 around 20 people, formed a group known as the Kishites[3] largely comprising college students from Pennsylvania State University. Around 1990 a break away group started handing out "Dark Tradition" material to other Satanic organizations which eventually led in 1997 to the formation of the Satanic Reds.
The Satanic Reds are a group that describe themselves as Social Realists, and claim to be a genuine Left Hand Path organization with no hierarchical structure to it. Satanic Reds are not Communist "Reds" or Socialist "Reds." -- that is not to say that people who hold to those politics are excluded, but that the organization claims not to be that kind of Red. The Satanic Reds define the term "Satano-Communism," to mean commune-ism, community, in the literal sense.
The Satanic Reds are not purported to be political in the sense that regular "Reds" are, and those who hold a Communist or Socialist political ideology would not consider them Red at all. They are Satanic in the modern sense in that they promote that which serves the self. Their philosophy also manages to serve those external to the self, promoting things such as a liveable wage and health care as a right not a privilege as well as high standards in public education.
[edit] Sat/Tan Beliefs
The Sat/Tan maintain that a vast Darkness representing the concepts of chaos and night existed before the universe existed and within a Flame or Light representing a creative force. The flame or Light flared up to create the Universe we know and that therefore all life possesses this creative Flame or Spark of Divine light. Followers believe they can perceive the inner light, those who neglect the flame are seen as living in Darkness and ignorance. A dictionary of Theology - Satanism
According to Geifodd ap Pwyll in [The Varieties of Religious Satanism] Sat/Tan are Deistic (or Pantheistic) Satanists. Deistic Satanists do not believe that Satan is a person or being. Instead they believe that Satan is an impersonal supreme being or force. They use the same "Dark Force in Nature" terminology that LaVeyans Satanists use, but place less emphasis on the teaching of LaVey and more on what they term "the Dark Doctrines."
The movement has assimilated ideas from Orphism, Pythagoreanism, Vedanta (from which it has borrowed the pun Sat/Tan) and Vajrayana. [1]
