Hasan - Muawiya treaty

In 661 CE, upon the death of Ali, the Sunni Caliph and Shi'a Imam, there was a military built up between Hasan ibn Ali and Muawiya I that resulted in a peace treaty.
Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, a 10th century Sunni Islamic scholar writes:
| al Hasan had already made peace with Muawiyah on condition that he concede to him what was in his treasury plus the revenue of Darabjird and that 'Ali not be reviled in his hearing. [1] |
Sa'id Akhtar Rizvi, a 21th century Shi'a twelver Islamic scholar writes:
| After the martyrdom of 'Ali (as), al-Imam Hasan wanted to continue the war with Mu'awiyah. But most of his officers were, meanwhile, bribed by Mu'awiyah; and many were the commanders who, when sent ahead to intercept Mu'awiyah, changed sides and went over to the enemy. In this situation, al-Imam Hasan (as) had to accept the offer of Mu'awiyah to conclude a treaty [2]. |
