Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897) lived much of her life as a slave in North Carolina, before she escaped to the North. Her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, documents the suffering unique to a woman slave at the time, focusing on the taboo subject of sexual subjugation by slave holders, and the triumphs and failures of both white and black communities. It incorporates elements of the sentimental novel to appeal to white Northern women in, but also complicates this picture by showing how the moral ideals of the The Cult of Domesticity subvert themselves in a slavery-tolerating society. Long considered a work of fiction written by the book's editor, L. Maria Child, work by feminist literary theorists, comparing Harriet's other writing to the book, proved it to be genuine.
