Harvel is a village in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 235 at the 2000 census.

Harvel is located at 39°21′21″N, 89°31′53″W (39.355804, -89.531317)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 235 people, 99 households, and 59 families residing in the village. The population density was 124.3/km² (323.2/mi²). There were 106 housing units at an average density of 56.1/km² (145.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.60% White, 0.85% African American, 1.28% Asian, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.43% of the population.

There were 99 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 4.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the village the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,625, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $33,750 versus $14,688 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,740. About 7.0% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.5% of those under the age of eighteen and 17.1% of those sixty five or over.

The village of Harvel was incorporated as a village in 1873, and was named for John Harvel, a distinguished Civil War veteran who resided in the area. The first settlers of the area were of German, French, and English extraction, and came to Harvel primarily from the eastern region of the United States. Harvel is one of Illinois' most important agriculturally-based communities, producing grain and livestock. The citizens of Harvel are proud of their strong rural heritage and are committed to keeping the community thriving for their children and many generations to come. There is a strong community spirit and civic pride in the village of Harvel, where citizens recognize that the most important aspects of life involve faith, families, and friendships. Harvel will remain, for many years to come, a shining example of all that is best in the state of Illinois.
