IMDb profile

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a planned future movie based on J.K. Rowling's sixth book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Production has not yet begun, though it appears that casting for some returning actors has taken place; some have claimed to be in negotiations or already signed up. The sixth film is scheduled for release on November 21, 2008.[3]

At the press conference for the release of the movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in October 2005, producer David Heyman said that Steve Kloves, though not writing the fifth movie, will return as screenwriter for the sixth installment.

Filming is due to start August 2007. It is rumored that filming may move from the UK, where all of the previous five films have been shot, to New Zealand, due to the "more agreeable economy and climate."[4]

[edit] Characters to be cast

[edit] Search for a director

No director has been officially chosen to helm the film, though many have been offered the job, and previous directors have expressed interest in returning.[3] However, director of Potter movies 1 and 2 Chris Columbus says he would return as director if and only if the actors he originally cast as the trio (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson) are not replaced for this film.[16] Alfonso Cuarón, the director of the third film, Prisoner of Azkaban, has said he "would love to have the opportunity" to return.[17] Grint mentioned the rumor that these two directors may return in an interview for the release of his latest film, Driving Lessons.[18] There is no word whether Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell has any interest to return.

In additon, Terry Gilliam was rumored on the Internet Movie Database to direct the film, though his name was quickly removed. He was the personal choice of Rowling to direct Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but in Gilliam's words, "Warner Bros. had their chance the first time around, and they blew it."[19] Matthew Vaughn and James McTeigue have reportedly been approached as well.[20] M. Night Shyamalan was also approached at one point, but has since declined the position,[20] citing that he would like to try his hand at adapting a book before attempting to take on Harry Potter.[21] Most recently, Order of the Phoenix director David Yates is rumored to have been offered the role by Warner Bros.,[22] and Access Hollywood has said that Michael Hoffman is in talks to direct,[23] though the Hoffman rumor was debunked within a few days.[24] It has been repeatedly reported that around Christmas 2006 Warner Bros. will make a decision regarding the director.[20][23]

On 13 November Warner Bros. claimed that nobody was yet in negotiations to direct.[25]
