Harold Raeburn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harold Andrew Raeburn (1865 July 21st to 1926 December 21st) was a leading Scottish mountaineer. He is considered by many to have been the leading Scots mountaineer up to his death in 1926.

He made many winter 'first ascents' - Green Gully (1906), Observatory Ridge (1920) on Ben Nevis, Crowberry Gully (1909) on Buachaille Etive Mor. Several of these first ascents, sometimes climbed alone, went largely unrecognised for many years. He also put up many new rock routes.

In 1921 he took part in (and initially led) the Everest reconnaissance expedition, but was overtaken by ill health.
