Harmony Intermediate School is a public secondary school in Hamilton, VA. It is part of Loudoun County Public Schools and part of the Loudoun Valley High School cluster.
Harmony opened in 2002 to alleviate crowding in western Loudoun County's secondary schools, by accommodating 8th graders in an overcrowded Blue Ridge Middle School and 9th graders at Loudoun Valley. Though the 9th graders at Harmony are not technically in the high school building, they take part in all interscholastic activities that are offered at Loudoun Valley, including all athletic activities. Harmony 9th graders who are in high school sports play under Loudoun Valley, rather than Harmony.
Harmony is one of only two public schools in the Northern Virginia area where 9th graders are in a separate school from the remaining high schoolers. The other school with an intermediate school format is Minnie Howard School in Alexandria, Virginia, which serves as a school only for 9th graders. Minnie Howard students attend T.C. Williams High School for their 10th-12th grade years.
Unlike Minnie Howard however, Harmony's assignment as an intermediate school is only temporary. After a new western Loudoun County high school opens in 2008 or 2009, Harmony will become a 6th-8th grade middle school.
