Harlem Hospital Center is a 286-bed public, non-profit community teaching hospital, and is a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. The Hospital is also a member of the Generations+/Northern Manhattan Health Network, which includes three acute-care facilities. Harlem Hospital Center is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center and an Area Wide Burn Center. It is also designated as a Heart Care Station by the American Heart Association and participates in the 911 Receiving Hospitals Advisory Committee.
Harlem Hospital Center has maintained a tradition of providing quality health care to an economically disadvantaged community in which the median family income for the primary service area of Central Harlem is $24,230, well below the $41,887 quoted in a recent census for New York City. In addition to offering much needed medical care, Harlem Hospital Center has been, and continues to be, a vital social, political and economic force within the community, and one of the largest training grounds of minority and female physicians in the United States. Harlem Hospital Center provides 450,000 outpatient visits, 75,000 emergency department visits, and 13,000 inpatient admissions per year.
