Hardy Murfree was an American colonel during the American Revolutionary War.
Murfree was born June 5, 1752, at Murfree's Landing, North Carolina, where he lived for most of his adult life. His parents were William Murfree and Mary Moore.
His first name is sometimes spelled Hardee, and some descendants or relatives of him spell their last name Murphrey or Murphy. However, some of the descendants of his son Matthias Brickell Murfree use the surname Murfree and reside in Murfreesboro, TN.
He was a Colonel in the American Revolutionary War, noted for leading a successful attack against British forces in the Battle of Stony Point at Stony Point, New York, on July 15, 1779.
Murfree married Sally Brickell on February 17, 1780, and they had four children: William Hardee Murfree (1781), Fanny Noailles Murfree (1783), Mary Moore Murfree (1786) and Matthias Brickell Murfree (1788).
He migrated to Tennessee in 1805, living on land granted him after the American Revolution, and remained there until his death on April 6, 1809, in Williamson County, Tennessee.
The town of Cannonsburgh, Tennessee, was renamed Murfreesboro in 1811 by the Tennessee State Legislature, in Murfree's honor.
Murfree's Landing, North Carolina, was also renamed Murfreesboro.
