Harbor Heights

The Heights, or Harbor Heights is a neighborhood of the Mamaroneck Village informally bordered on the south by the New England Thruway and the north by a reservoir of the Westchester Joint Water Works with Mamaroneck Avenue as the main north-south thoroughfare.

[edit] History

Alternately known as the Knolls, it was originally developed by Harry Rich Mooney in the 1920's and anchored by Knollwood Avenue as the premiere showcase for the neighborhood. It was here Mr. Mooney built a varied selection of modest homes in the Tudor and French Provincial styles in a hallmark of southern Westchester design of the early 20th century.

Mr. Mooney promoted the Knolls as a wholesome and convenient alternative to living in New York City. He advertised The Knolls in a nominal publication called Mooney's Megaphone in the New York Herald Tribune. An issue of November 12, 1927 shows drawings and photographs of house designs with names such as the Dorset, Mayfair and Le Bourget which were interspersed with testimonials of quality workmanship and the pleasant, family-friendly attributes of the area. Once the predominantly quarter-acre lots of Knollwood Avenue was established, other streets were developed including those on the west side of Mamaroneck Avenue. The Knolls continues to maintain its architectural characteristic even with the addition of many houses built during the post World War II housing boom, typically differing in style from their pre-war antecedents.
