[edit] History

Dong-A Polytechnic Institute, the forerunner of Hanyang University, was founded in 1939, during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The Institute's aim was to build a nucleus of engineers and technician necessary for an independent Korea. In July 1948, after liberation, the school was accredited as the first four-year engineering college in the nation. Later, in February 1959, its status was raised to that of a four-year university. In the 1960's and 1970's, Hanyang University graduates, particularly those from the College of Engineering, led the way in Korea's national drive for industrialization and modernization.

During the 1970's and 1980's, as the demands of Korean society grew, the university's role expanded from turning out highly qualified engineers to other areas such as the sciences, medicine, law, trade and commerce, and physical education.

In the 1990's and beyond, Hanyang University will continue to move forward by leaps and bounds, through both research and the extensive training of fully qualified professionals. It is hoped that such professional will both realize their personal aspirations and willingly serve the cause of the nation in this rapidly changing and extremely competitive age of globalization.

Hanyang University in one of the most important universities in Korea. As of March 2001, it had 20 colleges(faculties), 92 departments, 15 Schools of Graduate Studies, 2 university hosipitals with 1,600 beds, and 43 research institutes at the Seoul and Ansan campuses. Enrollment totals 32,000, including 7,600 graduate students and 8,800 students at the Ansan campus(located about 32 km south-west of Seoul). The full-time teaching faculty consists of 1,000 professors, in addition there are also some 1,500 part-timelecturers and instructors and over 1,140 teaching assistants.

The Industry-Academy Cooperation Center is supporting research funds from the beginning phases of the research, offers help so that the paper can be published in distinguished international scholarly journals, and provides support in order to promote research. Also, incentives are given to outstanding research accomplishments and patent application, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship is supported to spread the research findings into society.

Number of Journals published in SCI papers approaching the top 200 universities in the world
In 2005, 1,274 papers were published in SCI journals (ranked 210th in the world), and soon the university will be ranked within the top 200. Also, some of the papers were published by SCIENCE (1), CELL(1), and NATURE GENETICS(2), all widely known in the world.

Global level material and chemical engineering research capability
Hanyang University has global level research personnel in the material and chemical engineering field. The number of SCI papers published per professor in chemical engineering by Hanyang University professors is 9.4, compared to 6.8 of MIT and 8.5 of U.C. Berkeley. In material science, HYU professors publish 9.0 papers per person, MIT 3.3, and Dongbook University 6.6, achieving more than other major universities in the world. Also, the Specialization project for the Seoul Metropolitan Area (12.7 billion won in 4 years), BK 21 Project’s 2nd phase (12.4 billion won in 7 years) and other national and private grants offer plentiful scholarships and research support. The university also tries to continue recruiting globally acknowledged professors in order to have the world’s highest level of research capabilities in the material and chemical engineering fields.

Research Grants amounting to 100 billion won received annually
The research capabilities of Hanyang is recognized by the government and private firms both in Korea and in the world, receiving research funds amounting to 100 billion won per year (100 million won per professor). Funds received by private firms are 22 billion, and is increasing every year. Research cooperation with Samsung, LG, SK, Hynix Semiconductors, Hyundai Motors and other leading Korean firms are increasing and cooperation with Japanese and American firms is strengthened as well.

Top level research accomplishments and industrialization record in the nation
The technology transfer record of Hanyang is one of the best among Korean universities up to 2004, with about 1 billion worth of technology transfers. This places HYU in the top 3 among all institutions of higher learning, and the top among universities. Also, HYU was named as the best center in the pioneering TLO support project, which sponsors universities’ outstanding technology transfer centers, receiving 2 billion won of national grants over 5 years. HYU is also the leading university of the East Valley, a technology transfer conference of universities located in the eastern part of the Seoul Metropolitan Area (Hanyang University, Seoul Civic University, Konkuk University, Sejong University) strengthening the technology transfer network among universities. The venture incubation center is deemed outstanding by the government every year, and opened a branch office in Shanghai looking to support companies’ move into China. Finally, the fact that there are 12 CEOs among 100 KOSDAQ listed companies (3rd among Korean universities) further shows that HYU can compete with the best in realizing the results of research in the market.

Building a world class research cluster
HYU is operating a world class parts and material research cluster that can hold its own against the U.S.’s Silicon Valley, Japan’s Toyota Cluster, and Sweden’s Sista Cluster in Ansan Campus. Governmental research centers, KITECH, KERI, and KIST have already moved in, and private research centers of LG Innotek and LG Micron are also at Ansan carrying out research. Such outstanding results helped Ansan Campus receive 5 billion won annually from the government as it was chosen for the University centered Industry – Academy cooperation support project.

28 projects chosen for the 2nd phase of the BK21 project
The 2nd phase of BK21 project that supports global level research centered universities, chose to support 28 projects carried out by Hanyang University. Especially all the projects in the science and technology area that applied for support was selected, and with this a grant of 15.4 billion is secured, to be received over 7 years, laying the ground for the leap to a globally competitive research centered university. This can be interpreted as the government’s acknowledgement of Hanyang University’s potential to become a world level research centered university, and with this large scale investment and recruitment of excellent researchers, Hanyang is expected to join the top 200 universities in he world in the near future.
